Along came Amedeo
A unique type of beauty
Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) wrote his name into the history of art. His figures are as instantly recognizable as they are striking. Modigliani's unique figure conformed to his own idea of beauty, but drew on a rich variety of visual influences, including modern Cubism, African carvings, Cambodian sculptures, and thirteenth-century paintings from his native Italy. Although he is best known for his depictions of women, he used similar stylistic techniques to create portraits of male contemporaries such as Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau and Shaim Sutin.
This book presents key works from his highly individualistic repertoire, recounting Modigliani's short but revered career in the heart of Paris's hotbed of early modernism.
